Atlanta Hawks' Saddiq Bey to Debut Against Charlotte Hornets on Monday

The Atlanta Hawks will get their first look at their trade deadline acquisition Monday night. Former Detroit Piston forward Saddiq Bey was not listed on the NBA Injury Report, indicating he will make his debut tonight against the Charlotte Hornets. The Hawks landed Bey as part of a massive, multi-team trade that included five second-round picks and Golden State Warriors center James Wiseman. The trade was briefly in jeopardy following a failed physical by Gary Payton Jr. Luckily for all the parties involved, the Warriors eventually elected to proceed with the transaction.

Since entering the NBA as the 19th overall pick of the 2020 Draft, Bey has toiled thanklessly on a miserable Pistons squad, averaging 14.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game over 204 appearances. The Pistons' struggles over that span (58-154 since the 2020-21 season) have made it difficult to discern how effective a player Bey truly is. He sports a .400 field goal percentage, a .552 true shooting percentage, and a -1.1 defensive box plus/minus for his career. It could be he flourishes on a better team, or it's possible a functional squad doesn't have a place for him.

Given tonight will be Bey's first game with the Hawks, it's unlikely he will see extensive action against the Hornets. His next chance to carve out a role for himself will be on Wednesday night against the New York Knicks.
