Pistons Talks With Jalen Duran ‘Awfully Nasty’

Detroit Pistons restricted free agent Jalen Duren figures he's earned his money. Well over the $200 million mark, according to his calculations. He was expecting the full maximum or supermax extension. Thus far, he's turned down packages worth upwards of $175 million from the Pistons, and his camp has threatened to just take the $9M qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

Is the 22-year-old really ready to leave $166+ million on the table?

On the Hoops Collective podcast, ESPN's Tim MacMahon said things are getting "nasty" between the two sides.

"What's going to be the lingering cloud when this whole Jalen Duren situation gets finalized or at least temporarily settled? Like, is he going to sign an extension? Well, I don't know," said MacMahon.

'Ugly', 'Nasty' negotiations between Pistons & Jalen Duren drag on

"But this has been an awfully nasty negotiation. Sometimes these negotiations, when they're ugly like this, can have consequences... Long-lasting."

Podcast mate Vince Goodwill added that those 'consequences' can come in hurt feelings for the player.

"I'm not trying to give away too much here, but I think when you have negotiations like this, there's certain things that a player should not have to hear..when the messaging comes back (to them) about why you're not getting what you believe to be your value. And those are perhaps conversations that are going to have to be had to clear the air whenever he signs his deal."

Duren was certainly a big reason why the Pistons had a breakout season in 2025-26, winning 60 games and the 1-seed in the Eastern Conference. But he put on a disappearing act in the playoffs, and that will certainly be one of those "messages" that will get thrown at him from the team's side as they're negotiating their side of the argument for his true value.

Detroit is not interested in a sign-and-trade whatsoever, and they fully expect to have Duren manning the middle for them when the 2026-27 campaign gets underway.
