Free Agent Guard Cameron Payne Linked To Championship Contender

He established himself as a solid backup point guard in Phoenix over the past few years, but he was dealt away this summer in a salary dump, and then released by the San Antonio Spurs. Now a free agent, 8-year veteran Cameron Payne can pick and choose his next destination. And it appears that a championship contender is about to come calling.

According to several reports, the Milwaukee Bucks' search for a point guard to back up newly-acquired Damian Lillard is leading them to seriously consider Payne.

The 29-year-old averaged 10.3 points and 4.5 assists in just 20 minutes per game last season with the Suns, and generated 10.2 assists per 100 possessions throughout his four years in Phoenix. He even hit on nearly 37% of his three-point attempts last season.

Payne isn't the All-Defensive Team beast that the departed Jrue Holiday was, but with his wingspan, he's no slouch on that end of the floor, either.

The Miami Heat are said to be the other team to keep an eye on for Payne.
