Insider: Here's One Max Extension The Cavaliers Will Get Done This Summer
The Cleveland Cavaliers have a big summer ahead of them. Decisions on the futures of pretty much all four members of their Core Four could be made. And while Donovan Mitchell is eligible for a max long-term extension, so is Evan Mobley, who still has one year left on his rookie deal.
Cavs insider Chris Fedor chatted with Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, and Fedor made an emphatic prediction that Mobley will get the bag this summer.
My crystal ball says the Cavaliers are going to offer him a max extension, and he’s going to take it... He hasn’t played to that level yet, but there’s so much belief in Evan as a person and him as a player inside this organization.
There was some disappointment among fans that Mobley didn't take the giant steps in his third season that was expected of him, but the two-way big man is very highly thought of in the organization.
"They understand that he’s already one of the elite defensive players in the NBA," said Fedor. "That’s already where he’s at, and they believe he can get to a point offensively where he becomes the unicorn type of player they’ve talked about him being since he came into the NBA. I don’t think the Cavaliers are going to hesitate to offer him the max extension."
Fedor also believes that Cleveland is optimistic about their chances of re-signing Mitchell, and if they can get those cornerstones locked up, the Cavs are well on their way to being an Eastern Conference power for years to come, whatever the future holds for Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen.
