NBA Trade Rumors: Blockbuster Proposal Lands Kevin Durant In Toronto

Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant

The Toronto Raptors made history in 2019 by going all-in for Kawhi Leonard—could they pull off another franchise-altering move for Kevin Durant?

The Raptors find themselves at a pivotal moment. After finishing the 2024-25 season with a disappointing 30-52 record and missing the playoffs for the third consecutive year, the front office faces a critical decision: rebuild patiently or make another bold push for contention.

Their midseason acquisition of Brandon Ingram signaled a refusal to settle for a slow rebuild around rising star Scottie Barnes.

Now, with Kevin Durant’s tenure in Phoenix appearing shaky following another playoff disappointment, Toronto has an opportunity to make a seismic move.

Much like the 2019 Kawhi Leonard trade that delivered a championship, Masai Ujiri, President of the Toronto Raptors, has the draft capital, young talent, and track record to justify another high-stakes gamble.

Why This Trade Works for Toronto

A trio of Kevin Durant, Scottie Barnes, and Brandon Ingram would instantly transform the Raptors into an Eastern Conference threat. Despite his age, Durant remains elite—averaging 26.6 PPG, 6.0 RPG, and 4.2 APG this season on 52.7% shooting (43.0% from three).

Paired with Ingram (22.2 PPG, 5.2 APG) and Barnes (19.3 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 5.8 APG), Toronto would boast one of the most versatile and dynamic wing trios in the league. Durant’s playoff pedigree (two Finals MVPs) and clutch scoring would elevate a Raptors offense that ranked 25th in efficiency (110.5 ORtg) last season.

The addition of rookie big man Oso Ighodaro (4.2 PPG, 3.6 RPG) adds defensive depth, but the real prize is Durant—a proven winner who could accelerate Toronto’s timeline.

This move mirrors the 2019 Kawhi gamble: high-risk, high-reward. With Barnes as a playmaking forward, Ingram as a secondary scorer, and Durant as the closer, the Raptors would have the firepower to compete with Boston, Milwaukee, and New York.

Why Phoenix Makes This Deal

The Suns’ all-in bet on Durant hasn’t yielded a championship, and after missing the playoffs, a reset may be necessary. This trade allows them to recoup assets while adding two young, productive players:

Immanuel Quickley (17.1 PPG, 5.8 APG, 37.8% 3P) – A rising lead guard who can ease Devin Booker’s playmaking burden.

RJ Barrett (21.1 PPG post-trade, 46.8% FG) – A physical wing who gives Phoenix much-needed slashing and defense.

The 2028 first-round pick could also become valuable as Toronto’s core ages. While moving on from Durant is painful, Phoenix gains long-term flexibility while remaining competitive around Booker.

A Legacy-Defining Gamble for Toronto

Just as the Kawhi trade reshaped the franchise, acquiring Durant could reignite Toronto’s championship aspirations. The Raptors would instantly become must-watch TV, with Durant’s star power drawing national attention and filling seats at Scotiabank Arena.

For Phoenix, it’s a chance to pivot before their window closes completely. For Toronto? It’s an opportunity to write another unforgettable chapter—just like 2019.
