NBA Free Agency Rumors: Top 4 Russell Westbrook Landing Spots
Russell Westbrook is the newest addition to the free agent market, as he's declined his player option with the Denver Nuggets. The 36-year-old nine-time All-NBA point guard is no longer a starter, but he showed this season that he could play a solid role off the bench, and averaged 13.3 points and 6.1 assists in almost 28 minutes a game.
So where might Westbrook land, if he leaves Denver in free agency? Let's take a look at four of the top rumored landing spots.
Sacramento Kings
The Kings had two of the top point guards in the NBA in their backcourt as recently as 2022. Now, they have none, with Tyrese Haliburton leading a Pacers team looking to win a championship, and De'Aaron Fox dealt to San Antonio at this year's deadline. Adam Wells of Bleacher Report figures Westbrook is a good fit here as he'd be joining a team whose offense runs through its center, in Domantas Sabonis. That's the type of system he successfully navigated this past season in Denver (though obviously, Sabonis is no Nikola Jokic).
Dallas Mavericks
A team that also is need of point guard help this coming season. The Mavs will be without Kyrie Irving for at least the first half of the season due to his ACL tear, and don't forget, Westbrook does have experience playing with Anthony Davis from his time with the LA Lakers.
Milwaukee Bucks
Another team with an injured point guard that's looking for a solution for the coming season to keep them in contention. Damian Lillard is out for the 2025-26 campaign, and while Westbrook can't shoot the ball like Dame, he could work as a complementary playmaker and proven veteran for Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Boston Celtics
The Celtics are looking to unload salary this offseason to get under the second apron of the luxury tax. One of the prime targets to go in a trade is point guard Jrue Holiday and his three years and $100M+ remaining in salary. Westbrook obviously would not provide the defense that Holiday did, but he can offer playmaking and intensity, and a veteran presence. Mile High Sports' Ryan Blackburn has also suggested the Celtics are a potential destination.
