NBA Rumors: 3 Teams Closing In On Al Horford

Al Horford has had a legendary run in Boston. Over the last four seasons, in his late 30s (newly-turned 39), Horford has continued to be a beast on defense down low for the Celtics, while spreading the floor with consistent shooting from beyond the arc. He played a key role in their 2024 championship, playing 30 minutes a night in the playoffs.

But it appears that Horford's time in Boston is up, as the free agent now has three top suitors angling to sign him, led by the Dubs.

Golden State Warriors

The Warriors seem to be the team to beat. For what it's worth, Bill Simmons says that Horford will, indeed, be signing in Golden State.

"Horford's going to Golden State," Simmons said on The Bill Simmons Podcast.

"That's basically treated as a foregone conclusion around the league right now," added Rob Mahoney. "Everyone is assuming that Horford will be a Golden State Warrior, and we'll see if that ends up happening..."

"It's happening," Simmons repeated. The most famous Celtics fan in media circles is likely bitter about Horford leaving Beantown, so we can't necessarily take his word as gospel just yet.

Fellow insider Marc Stein, however, also suggests that Horford is heading to San Francisco.

Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers, after landing Deandre Ayton to man the 'five', are still in need of another solid veteran big man defender, and they've been tied to Horford for a while now this offseason.

Denver Nuggets

The sudden and shocking departure from the NBA of center Jonas Valanciunas, just two days after the Nuggets traded for him, has forced them to quickly pivot in trying to bring in Horford as a backup center.

The Nuggets would have their midlevel exception of $14.1 million to throw at Horford.

But let's throw one more wrench into the mix: There's also a report that Horford is considering retirement:

We should have an answer from Horford in short order.
