NBA Trade Rumors: 5 Names Linked to Detroit Pistons as Targets to Upgrade Offense
Yes, the Detroit Pistons are up 2-0 on the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round, and are just two wins away from making their first appearance in the Eastern Conference Final since 2008.
It's their defense that usually rules the day for the Pistons, as they placed second in the entire NBA in defensive rating during the regular season.
But outside of superstar Cade Cunningham's 23.9 points per game (and the 19.5 ppg that Jalen Duren posted), scoring wasn't Detroit's strong suit this year.
Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report has offered up five names that the Pistons should try to acquire this offseason to bolster their scoring. "On the year, Detroit shot the second-fewest threes per game and only hit them at a 35.6 percent clip," writes Hughes.
Potential targets, all of the off-guard variety, and all set to hit free agency, include:
CJ McCollum
The veteran guard had another fine season shooting the ball, averaging 18.7 points, though his three-point shot was down a tad, at 35.7% (career-wise, he's better than a 39% shooter from long distance).
Ayo Dosunmu
The speedy guard was one of the NBA's top three-point shooters this season, at nearly 44%, while posting a career-high 14.8 points per game. He was a huge factor for the Minnesota Timberwolves in their six-game defeat of the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the playoffs. He posted 43-point and 25-point games in two of the T-Wolves victories in that series, and overall averaged 22 ppg in the six-game set.
Norman Powell
The 32-year-old earned his first All-Star berth this season with the Miami Heat, averaging 21.7 ppg, and continuing to drain threes at an elite level. He's a 40% shooter from distance for his career, and would be an ideal fit for the Pistons.
Anfernee Simons
After an off-year in Boston and Chicago, Simons will hit the free agent market. His numbers took a dip this past season, but he's been a 20-point scorer twice in his young career, and can usually be counted on to hit threes at about a 38% clip or higher.
Zach LaVine
The offensive guard has a player option with the Sacramento Kings, at $49M. It's highly unlikely that he doesn't pick that up, as there's no other contract like that out there for him on the market. But on the off chance that he declines and becomes a free agent, Hughes suggests the Pistons take a look at LaVine.
For now, Duncan Robinson fills the two-guard spot for the Pistons. Somehow, despite shooting over 40% from long range, and starting every game, he's averaged just 12 points per game this season. Any of the aforementioned players can be counted on to fill it up at a much greater rate than that.
