RFA Bennedict Mathurin Has Renewed Interest From 2 Surprising Teams

LA Clippers' exciting young guard Bennedict Mathurin remains unsigned as a restricted free agent, but that might change soon. There is renewed interest in the former Indiana Pacer, who is coming off a strong season split between the Pacers and Clippers. 

Insider Scoop B Robinson gives us the full lowdown on how the New Orleans Pelicans and Chicago Bulls are chasing down Mathurin, and why the Clippers are not locking him up.

“They chased him at the deadline,” a source familiar with the situation told Scoop B regarding New Orleans' interest. “The Pelicans have always been big fans of his and are very interested in trying to get him. They see him as a core piece, as a starting-caliber player. Their ultimate goal is to figure out how to build around guys like Derik Queen, Jeremiah Fears, and maybe Zion.” 

As for the Bulls, they are "serious" suitors as well, says Robinson.

"For Chicago’s new front office, the mandate is clear: elevate the competitive floor and upgrade the roster. Adding a proven, dynamic scorer like Mathurin fits directly into that strategy as a piece capable of swinging tight games."

Clippers facing a holding pattern on Mathurin

So why are the Clippers dragging their feet on signing him? Seems it all comes back to that Kawhi Leonard situation holding things up. 

"Los Angeles finds itself in a broader holding pattern while navigating roster dynamics and the lingering resolution of the Kawhi Leonard situation," Scoop wrote. "While the Clippers remain open to bringing him back, navigating restricted free agency is inherently unpredictable—meaning a resolution could materialize quickly or stretch late into the summer ahead of training camp."

Mathurin averaged 17.6 points per game last season, and has average 16.2 PPG over the course of his four-year career.
