D’Angelo Russell Becomes Free Agent After Being Traded For 7th Time
The Memphis Grizzlies have waived D’Angelo Russell, sources tell ESPN. With Memphis needing to trim its roster, this frees Russell up to potentially land somewhere before the start of the season.

The 30-year-old former All-Star point guard began last season with the Dallas Mavericks, but following two trades, he wound up as property of the Grizzlies this summer. He never played a game with them, nor with the Washington Wizards, who he was dealt to by Dallas as part of the Anthony Davis trade. That makes seven trades for D'Lo in his 11-year career:
- June 22, 2017: Traded from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Brooklyn Nets
- July 7, 2019: Sign-and-trade from Nets to the Golden State Warriors
- February 6, 2020: Traded from the Golden State Warriors to the Minnesota Timberwolves
- February 8, 2023: Traded from the Minnesota Timberwolves back to the Los Angeles Lakers
- December 29, 2024: Traded from the Los Angeles Lakers (along with Maxwell Lewis and picks) back to the Brooklyn Nets
- February 4, 2026: Traded from the Dallas Mavericks along with Anthony Davis and others to the Washington Wizards
- July 7, 2026: Traded to the Memphis Grizzlies as part of a six-team deal
Russell averaged 10.2 points and 4.0 assists in 26 games for Dallas last season. He was still a valuable contributor as recently as 2023-24, when he averaged 18 points and five assists as a starter at the point for the Los Angeles Lakers.
He was an All-Star in 2018-19 with the Brooklyn Nets, his 4th year in the NBA.
