"The Miami Heat have both the salary-cap and roster-space wherewithal to make a move for (Carter)," Winderman said.
The Heat have a need for a guard like Carter, to slide in to help at the point behind Davion Mitchell and Dru Smith. His defensive acumen, like Mitchell's, could make him a favorite for Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra.
Heat in the running for Devin Carter after he clears waivers
Carter was waived by the Atlanta Hawks on Friday, and once he clears waivers, he'll be free to sign with any team. He had a $5 million contract for this season, so it's unlikely anyone claims him off waivers, meaning the Hawks will have to eat that and pay Carter, essentially, to play for a rival team.
And if it's not the Heat, it'll likely be another Eastern Conference rival, the Boston Celtics, according to reports over the weekend.
Carter, the former lottery pick, will be a nice low-risk buy for whoever lands him. He provides staunch defense in the backcourt, as his gritty play and 6'9" wingspan makes it awfully difficult on opposing guards.
He played his first two seasons with the Sacramento Kings, and posted a career-best of 8.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists across 38 games last season. But the Kings ditched him in a salary-dump trade earlier in the offseason, and now surprisingly the Hawks have cut him as well.
The next team he lands with, however, be it Miami or Boston, or anyone else, will be somewhere that he's wanted for the elite defensive play he brings, along with a developing offensive game.
If he can find a way to avoid injuries—which have held him to an average of 37 games a season in his first two years in the league—Carter could be a sneaky-good addition.
