Former NBA All-Star Proposes Blockbuster Trade For Anthony Davis
DeMarcus Cousins certainly had his detractors during his 11 controversial years in the NBA. But if the four-time All-Star knows anything, he certainly knows about fellow All-Star centers.
On this week's Gil's Arena podcast with Gilbert Arenas & crew, Cousins proposed a big-time blockbuster one-for-one swap that would send Anthony Davis to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Rudy Gobert (h/t Sportsnaut). We know that the Wizards have been balking at granting Davis the big extension he's looking for.
"I've been kinda thinking on that situation as far as AD getting his extension. If the Wizards are feeling like it's not a good move... With everything that’s going on in Minnesota right now with Ant and how much time he's gonna miss, I say they do a straight-up trade for Rudy and AD."
With Anthony Edwards taking his 33 points a game to the sidelines for the next 30 games or so with a knee injury, the T-Wolves could certainly use another offensive weapon for new splashy point guard LaMelo Ball to get the ball to. Davis provides some major scoring that Gobert can only dream of.
"Rudy's looking crazy, man.. He's shooting 23% at the rim or something like that? (editor's note: Yes, 23.1%, and he's 0-for-13 from the field in his last two games)," asked Cousins.
But Arenas, who played 8 years with the Wiz, stepped in to question Boogie as to why on earth the Wizards would want that?
"You heard what you just said, man? You saying Rudy playing like ass. But you want the Wiz to take him?"
The big selling point there for a rebuilding Washington squad would be allowing most of AD's touches and shots to go to No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybansta. The rookie has only played one game, and was 8-for-12 with 19 points in his debut.
Davis has been taking just under 19 shots a game for Washington this season, while Gobert is taking just 5.4 shots a game.
"The Wizards get that defensive anchor... I think it works for both teams," Cousins continued.
Minnesota's first game without Edwards was a 119-114 loss to the Golden State Warriors.
But would the T-Wolves be any more interested in extending AD on a massive multi-year deal when the big man has never shown that he can stay healthy? He played a grand total of 20 games last season and 51 the year before that. He's topped the 56-game mark only twice in the previous eight years.
It's an interesting proposal, but not one that has been thought all the way through with all of the cap and roster implications that would come with it.
