Lakers Sign Big Man to Standard NBA Contract

The Los Angeles Lakers have signed big man Wenyen Gabriel to a standard NBA contract, per Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Charania adds that Gabriel's deal is for two-years, with a team option in the 2022-23 season.

The 25-year-old initially signed with the Lakers on a two-way contract on March 1, 2022. But he has earned a two-year pact with the possibility to remain a member of the Purple and Gold, should Los Angeles pick up his option for next season.

Gabriel has appeared in 17 games with the Lakers and turned in averages of 5.7 points and 3.8 rebounds in nearly 15 minutes per game.

The 6-foot-9 big man certainly received a great opportunity to finally find his place in the NBA when Anthony Davis went down with an injury. He has certainly taken advantage of the situation.

Since going undrafted in 2018, Gabriel has played in six different franchises in the NBA. This season alone, he had short stints with the Brooklyn Nets and L.A. Clippers before getting his chance with the Lakers.

The Lakers' 2021-22 season recently came to a disappointing end earlier this week. With that, they shift their focus on giving players like Gabriel an extra look and a possible opportunity to earn a roster spot next season.
