3 NBA Superstars Who Could Be Traded After Mavericks' Lottery Win
The stunning (and some would say, rigged) Dallas Mavericks NBA lottery win has opened up some intriguing trade possibilities this summer. In fact, the lottery in general, with the Mavs, San Antonio Spurs and Philadelphia 76ers finishing with the top three picks (a 1 in 10,000 chance), has set up this summer for a slew of blockbuster deals.
Why? Those three teams are in 'win-now' mode. Taking on 18 year old rookies, no matter how talented, generally isn't the way for teams to compete for championships in the NBA.
Therefore, John Hollinger writes in The Athletic, we may be set up for a wild summer that could include trades of the following three superstars:
Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee Bucks
The Mavericks, as Hollinger notes, could make a move with their impending selection of generational player Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick. "Dallas’ win-now trajectory around Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis could make it hard to pass on the idea of adding Giannis to the mix," writes Hollinger. "On the flip side, Flagg would allow an aging, crumbling Bucks roster to reset for the next generation."
A Flagg for Antetokounmpo trade? How insane would that be?
Also, we've heard suggestions that the Spurs would love to put Giannis and Victor Wembanyama together as the most freakishly long and incredible pairing—at both ends of the floor—perhaps in history. With the #2 pick, the Spurs could put together a pretty exciting package for the Bucks, including the likes of Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell.
Jaylen Brown, Boston Celtics
With Jayson Tatum out for all of next season for the Celtics after his devastating ruptured Achilles injury suffered Monday night, does Jaylen Brown and his massive $236 million owed over the next four seasons become a trade piece? With Flagg from nearby Newport, Maine, could the Celtics swap out Brown for the Duke phenom? "Would Boston mind resetting around a New England native and waiting out a gap year if Tatum needs it to recover?" asks Hollinger, more than rhetorically.
Anthony Davis, Dallas Mavericks
Does Dallas reset and move on completely from the disastrous Luka Doncic for AD trade, and take an offer from the Sixers, Hollinger proposes, that would include the No. 3 overall pick plus two other firsts, and Paul George in return for Davis. And all the while the Mavs get to keep Flagg?
So many wild and crazy possibilities, we could be set up for an insane blockbuster summer.
