According to insider Shams Charania, Pop will be transitioning full-time to Team President.
In 29 seasons at the helm in San Antonio, Popovich has a .621 winning percentage, with a record of 1422-869, and is the NBA’s all-time winningest coach and a Basketball Hall of Famer. He led the Spurs to five championships.
Mitch Johnson named new full-time Spurs head coach
San Antonio has moved quickly to name assistant Mitch Johnson as the new head coach. He has been the interim head coach in the absence of Pop since Nov. 2nd, and now earns the title outright. He was an assistant, learning under the master, for the past 10 years.
Johnson's hiring allows the Spurs to not miss a beat, keeping with the continuity and succession line built out by Popovich, GM Brian Wright and CEO RJ Buford.
