Chris Paul could have future with surprising Western Conference team
What next for future Hall of Famer Chris Paul? Just when observers thought he was starting to slow down, the iconic point guard had a nice age-39 season with the San Antonio Spurs, playing in all 82 games and averaging 8.8 points and 7.4 assists while hitting on 37.7% of his threes.
But the Spurs went out at the deadline and traded for their point guard of the future in All-Star De'Aaron Fox. It sort of leaves CP3 as a redundancy that the Spurs no longer need. He helped mentor young phenom Victor Wembanyama, but now it's felt that he'll move on this summer.
According to Sam Amico of Hoops Wire, the Portland Trail Blazers would like to see Paul do some mentoring of the player selected two spots after Wemby in the 2023 NBA Draft, Scoot Henderson.

“The Blazers are among the teams that could have an interest in Chris Paul should he not return to the Spurs, a source told Hoops Wire," wrote Amico. "Portland GM Joe Cronin has suggested he likes the roster as currently constructed, though those around the league have said the Blazers would like to add a veteran guard to mentor Scoot Henderson.”
The 6-foot-3 point guard took a bit of a step back in his sophomore season, seeing all of his primary numbers drop down a tick, including points (14 to 12.7 ppg), assists (5.4 to 5.1 per game), starts (32 to 10) and minutes (28.5 to 26.7).
Having the legendary Chris Paul mentoring him could take Henderson to the next level, and would be a nice investment for the Trail Blazers to make. But would CP3 want to give up on any chance whatsoever of winning a title before his career is done? At the age of 40, he's running out of time, and the Blazers are years away from being a contender.
