Jason Kidd Unhappy in Dallas, Intrigued With NY Knicks' Opening
Is the New York Knicks' apparent interest in Jason Kidd as their next head coach a mutual attraction kind of thing? It certainly seems that way. A report from James Edwards III of The Athletic indicates that Kidd wasn't happy in Dallas after their shocking trade of Luka Doncic.
"Kidd didn’t always enjoy being Dallas’ spokesperson in the aftermath of the franchise trading Luka Doncic, per league sources," writes Edwards. "In a Feb. 10 game against the Kings, Mavericks center Daniel Gafford got hurt. In the middle of the injury crisis, multiple fans were also ejected for protesting the Doncic trade. Kidd didn’t address the media afterward."
Two days later, Kidd explained his absence from the postgame process by saying, “I just needed a break."
And when it comes to the New York Knicks' new opening at head coach, one insider is telling us that, indeed, "Jason Kidd wants that job."

"Jason Kidd wants that job."
"When a team doesn’t shut down an interview request, it usually means the coach wants out. The Rockets shut it down with Ime Udoka immediately. The Mavericks haven’t said a word about Kidd and the Knicks." https://t.co/wu46e41sXy pic.twitter.com/MsxztBw0lX
According to 'Scoop B', "When a team doesn’t shut down an interview request, it usually means the coach wants out. The Rockets shut it down with Ime Udoka immediately. The Mavericks haven’t said a word about Kidd and the Knicks."
A Hall of Famer as a player, Kidd has had his moments as a head coach in the NBA, including taking the Mavericks to the NBA Finals in 2023-24. But that was in the WL era: With Luka. In the PL era, post-Luka, the Mavs went 13-20. Overall, in his four years as head coach of the Mavs, Kidd has a .546 winning percentage. He still has two years to run on his contract with the team.
Interestingly, this wouldn't be the first time that Kidd was poached by another team while still under contract. In 2014, while Kidd was coaching the Brooklyn Nets, the Milwaukee Bucks traded for his coaching rights in a deal for two second-round picks.
The Knicks made a surprising move last week coming off their first Conference Finals appearance in 25 years, firing Tom Thibodeau. It's since come out that several Knicks players weren't too thrilled playing under Thibs, and their exit interviews "sounded alarms within the organization."
The face of the Knicks franchise, on and off the court, Jalen Brunson, has a relationship with Kidd from their time together in Dallas.
