New Team Enters the Sweepstakes for Free Agent Malik Beasley

Malik Beasley is cleared of any gambling allegations, and his dormant free agency has come back to life. The sharpshooter, who was first in the NBA in bench scoring and second in total three-pointers made, won't get the contract he could have had, but there are a number of teams in the running for his services, and a new title contender has now entered the mix.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have joined the fray, along with previously known interested parties, the New York Knicks, Indiana Pacers and the incumbents, the Detroit Pistons. s

As for the Cavaliers, they lost key shooting guard Ty Jerome in free agency last month; he was the 3rd-place finisher in the Sixth Man of the Year voting, so replacing him with the runner-up for that award, playing the same position, makes a whole lot of sense. The Cavs, though, can only offer Beasley the minimum salary.

The 6'4" sniper averaged 16.3 points per game while shooting a career-high 41.6% from three-point range for Detroit last year.

But the $42 million, three-year deal the Pistons were expected to re-sign him to is long gone now after all the summer spending has been done.

One thing to keep in mind, however, amidst all this, notes Michael McCann of Sportico, is that the NBA still needs to determine if Beasley broke any “contractual, labor and employment obligations," even though he was cleared and will not be charged by the feds in the gambling investigation.
