Austin Reaves' Free Agency Could Lead Him to This Western Team
Austin Reaves is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the coming season, as he's largely expected to decline his $14.9 million player option. According to a report from Anthony Irwin, one enticing destination for him, and a team that has him on their radar, is the San Antonio Spurs.

Reaves is expected to be looking at an annual salary of $30-35 million per year.
Given the fact that they could potentially lose him for nothing, Irwin suggests in Clutch Points that the Lakers had better consider something drastic this season:
"They'd be remiss not to consider trading him at some point this season, especially if it becomes clear he and Doncic's athleticism concerns are too much to overcome in pursuit of a championship."
He goes on to note, however, that the Lakers' preference would be to see Doncic & Reaves "be a viable pair moving forward. They've already rewarded Doncic with his contract extension and, if this season goes well, would look forward to doing the same for Reaves' next deal."
The Lakers turned down any requests to include Reaves in any trade this summer unless in brought back a bona fide star.
As for the Spurs, their backcourt is pretty crowded at the moment, so it would be interesting to see how that would work. With De'Aaron Fox as the starting point guard, Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle as the shooting guard, and lottery pick Dylan Harper (No. 2 overall, 2025) expected to get rotation minutes as a third guard, there could be a lack of minutes to go around.
Reaves could play some small forward, though a big undersized at 6'5", but the Spurs also have Devin Vassell and Keldon Johnson at the 'three.' A trade of one of those two would be a certainty in this situation.
Last season, the 27-year-old Reaves broke out with a career year, continuing an exciting ascension the past three seasons. He averaged 20.2 points, 5.8 assists and 4.5 boards, while shooting 37.7% from long range, and starting all 73 games he played.
