Top 3 Landing Spots For Free Agent Jonathan Kuminga
It wasn't that long ago that former 7th overall pick Jonathan Kuminga wanted to be paid like a superstar, and forced his way out of Golden State. Now, he's an unrestricted free agent looking for a new deal.
The Atlanta Hawks declined his $24.3 million team option for the upcoming season. He managed just 12.3 points per game in his 16 games after being traded from the Golden State Warriors to the Hawks.
His original dreams of wanting $30M++ on a long-term deal are no more. Can he still be a good piece off the bench for a good team in need of scoring? Absolutely. Here, we look at the 3 top landing spots for Kuminga, for teams hoping to tap into his potential.
Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cavs have suddenly become a very real destination for LeBron James once again, and that would likely spell the end of their interest in Kuminga. But if the former Warrior makes his way to Cleveland, he'd be rejoining Kenny Atkinson, who was an assistant during the young player's time in Golden State.
Los Angeles Lakers
The Purple & Gold "could use a physically gifted wing like Kuminga in free agency now that LeBron James is poised to sign elsewhere," writes Mike Chiari in Bleacher Report. The Lakers have made some nice additions this offseason, and Kuminga would be another building block for the future.
Milwaukee Bucks
The Bucks are in rebuild mode, and they could do worse than adding a 23-year-old athletic forward like Kuminga. "The Bucks could provide Kuminga with the best chance to play big, meaningful minutes," writes Chiari, given their big reset after the trade of Giannis Antetokounmpo to Miami.
The Hawks also have some interest in re-signing Kuminga, according to Marc Stein and Jake Fischer, but obviously, given the fact that they didn't pick up their team option, at a more moderate salary.
