Breaking: Free Agent Guard Monte Morris Signs Deal to Fill Huge Void

Monte Morris, NBA guard

Eight-year veteran point guard Monte Morris spent last season with the Phoenix Suns, though he played just 12.7 minutes a night. This season, he'll be filling an All-Star sized void in the Indiana Pacers backcourt, signing a one-year deal with the team.

Now, to be clear, Morris will not exactly be filling the shoes of two-time All-Star and one-time NBA Assist Leader Tyrese Haliburton. Those minutes and responsibilities will mostly be filled by Andrew Nembhard and TJ McConnell. But Morris backfills in the backcourt with some point guard depth.

Haliburton will miss the entire season due to a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Over his career, Morris has averaged 9.5 points and 3.6 assists per game, in about 24 minutes a night. But he was a double-digit scorer in four of his first five seasons in the NBA, filling a Sixth Man role and then a starting role often while with the Denver Nuggets for five years and then a season with the Washington Wizards.

His production and playing time have plummeted, however, over the past two seasons, cratering his value on the open market. But he can still fill it up from long range, as his 38.9% career mark from three-point land attests.

In addition to the Nuggets, Wizards and Suns, Morris has also suited up with the Detroit Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves.
