Monte Morris Released Just Two Days After Being Signed

Monte Morris

It wasn't exactly a lengthy or productive stay in Indiana for point guard Monte Morris. Just two days after signing the free agent guard, the Pacers have now released Morris after he suffered a calf injury in training camp.

It was a non-guaranteed contract, so it made the Pacers' decision easy. They need to fill their last roster spot with some guard depth, but with Morris suffering a calf strain that will keep him out for a few weeks, he wouldn't have made the club, and they'll need to move on and find a replacement.

The Pacers are in need of another ballhandler in the backcourt, as they have a huge void to fill with All-Star Tyrese Haliburton out for the entire season. He went down to a ruptured Achilles tendon suffered during a heartbreaking moment near the start of Game 7 of the NBA Finals.

Andrew Nembhard and TJ McConnell, valuable parts of the Pacers rotation that has gone to the NBA Finals the last two seasons, will take over all of the main point guard duties for now, but some depth will be needed.

Does Russell Westbrook somehow enter the equation here? Does head coach Rick Carlisle want to deal with that?

As for Morris, the veteran will head back to the free agent class once his calf injury is healed. Over his career, Morris has averaged 9.5 points and 3.6 assists per game, in about 24 minutes a night across eight seasons in the NBA.
