Gary Trent Gets Shockingly Large Deal in Free Agency

After settling for minimum contracts of $2.6M and $3.7M over the last three seasons and being relegated to mostly a bench role, Gary Trent Jr. has landed himself a shockingly large deal in free agency. Four years, $64 million, and he's headed back to the Milwaukee Bucks.

The deal is fully guaranteed with no options. After averaging career lows with 8.1 points per game and 21.2 minutes a night this past season, Trent somehow was able to wrench a $16M annual salary out of the Bucks for the next four years.

In fact, some veteran observers of the game are wondering if everything is kosher here.

Sam Vecenie wrote, "The NBA should probably take a look at what is a truly nonsensical contract here."

Nate Duncan adds that this contract is "obvious circumvention and should be punished by the league. This would fall under the provision that there is no possible explanation other than circumvention."

Trent was once a starter a legitimate 18 ppg scorer, while with the Toronto Raptors. But that was four years ago, and since then, his scoring and minutes have declined each and every year. And his minimum contracts have reflected that.

For his career, Trent Jr. averages 13 ppg and shoots 38.7% from long range.
