Tough Injury News for Sacramento Kings & Keegan Murray

Keegan Murray, Sacramento Kings

The Sacramento Kings took a big hit on Sunday when they learned that up-and-coming forward Keegan Murray will miss at least the first four weeks of the season with a torn thumb ligament.

Murray suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament of the left thumb in an exhibition game on Friday against the Portland Trail Blazers. He'll undergo surgery and will be re-evaluated in approximately four-to-six weeks. With the season just 10 days away, that'll put Murray out until at least mid-November, and possibly later.

Murray is eligible for a rookie-scale extension up until Oct. 20th. The Kings won't get to see any more game action from the 6'8" forward before making that decision.

Murray is entering his fourth season in the NBA. He averaged 12.4 points and 6.7 rebounds per game last season, which was a slight step back from his sophomore year, when he averaged a career-best 15.2 points per game.

His three-point shooting has been declining over his three seasons, from a 41% mark in his rookie year, down to 35.8%, then 34.3% this past season.

He was the No. 4 overall selection in the 2022 NBA Draft, and finished 5th in Rookie of the Year balloting in 2022-23.

Doug McDermott and Dario Saric are some of the depth forwards who should see more minutes in Murray's absence over the first 15 games or so.

The Kings finished 40-42 and 9th in the Western Conference last season, before losing in the Play-In.
