Indiana Pacers Sign Veteran Point Guard, Make Decision on Mac McClung

Mac McClung, the first ever Slam Dunk three-repeat champion, wasn’t given much runway with the Indiana Pacers on his first ever standard NBA multi-year deal. After just three games, he’s been released from his non-guaranteed two-year contract, and the Pacers have instead decided to give veteran point guard Monte Morris a try.

McClung, 26, known more for his highlight reel dunking than game play as a pro, averaged 6.3 points in 11.3 minutes in three games with the Pacers. He was the G League MVP in 2023-24, scoring over 25 points a game.

Indiana has been ravaged by injuries, especially in the backcourt this season, with a list of players out that includes:

  • Tyrese Haliburton (out for season, torn Achilles)
  • T.J. McConnell
  • Benedict Mathurin
  • Andrew Nembhard
  • Obi Toppin
  • Kam Jones
  • Johnny Furphy
  • Quenton Jackson

Obviously, the All-Star Haliburton is the most serious loss, but the main guards who were expected to fill in for him are all out as well.

Morris is an eight-year NBA veteran, and last played for the Phoenix Suns in 2024-25, suiting up for 45 games and  averaging 5.2 points, 1.6 assists and 1.5 rebounds. In his career, he’s averaged 9.5 points and 38.6% from three-point range. He was a solid bench piece for the Denver Nuggets for four years, averaging over 25 minutes a game, but he’s bounced around the league with several teams in the past couple of years.
