Pelicans & Grizzlies Discuss Blockbuster 4-Player Deal

The New Orleans Pelicans seem like one of the few teams around the NBA that are serious about trying to land Ja Morant from the Memphis Grizzlies. A report from Scoop B details a four-player trade offer that the Pels made.

"From what I’m hearing, the Pelicans put a heavy-hitting offer on the table."

Morant's relationship with the Grizz has soured over the past while. He's had suspensions, a long list of injuries, and confrontations with coaches and players. And while he says he wants to stay in Memphis, his actions don't show it.

The first proposed trade that was reported went like this:

Grizzlies receive:

  • Jordan Poole
  • Dejounte Murray
Pelicans receive:
  • Ja Morant
  • Kentavious Caldwell-Pope

The Pels, hoping to team up Morant with Zion Williamson for one of the most dynamic duos in the league, "floated several other packages to see if Memphis would bite on depth and veteran presence," reports Scoop B. Robinson.

The alternate packages he reported included:

  • Jordan Poole and Kevon Looney
  • Jordan Poole, Jordan Hawkins, and DeAndre Jordan

But Scoop says that Memphis insisted on a first-rounder being attached to any deal—even if it was protected. But the Pelicans weren't biting, at least not yet.

"They were willing to shuffle the roster, but they weren’t willing to mortgage the future.

“The Pelicans aren’t just looking to ‘tweak’ the margins; they are looking to be ultra-aggressive.”

A marriage of Ja and Zion would be a reunion for the two. They played on the same AAU team and were the first two picks of the 2019 NBA Draft.

Insider Marc Stein has disputed these reports, suggesting that there have been no specific trade talks between New Orleans and Memphis.

The Grizzlies are currently not in a playoff (or even Play-In) spot, sitting in the 11-seed in the Western Conference. But the Pelicans are even worse, in dead last in the Western Conference at 12-36.
