NBA Trade Rumor: Kyrie Irving Heads to Orlando in Proposed Summer Blockbuster

This isn't your Luka Doncic/Kyrie Irving Dallas Mavericks. That's ancient history. Soon after the Mavs made the shocking franchise-shifting trade of Luka to the LA Lakers last year, they stumbled into their new future by winning the lottery and landing No. 1 draft pick Cooper Flagg. He is the new face of the franchise.

They shipped out Anthony Davis at the trade deadline this year, and it's quite likely that Kyrie Irving will follow AD out the door this summer. The Mavs want to completely hand the keys over to Flagg.

Irving has been out all season recovering from ACL reconstruction surgery, and he and the team announced last month that he will sit out the remainder of the 2025-26 season.

Kyrie still has next year ($39M) and a player option for the following season ($42.4M) remaining on his contract. If the Mavericks do look for a new home for the 34-year-old, one proposal, from insider Sam Amico of Hoops Wire, would send Irving to the Orlando Magic as the missing piece they need to get them over the hump.

Orlando Magic receive:

  • Kyrie Irving

Dallas Mavericks receive:
  • Jalen Suggs
  • Jonathan Isaac

The Magic have been knocking on the door of moving into the upper echolon of the Eastern Conference for a couple of years now, but they have struggled to take that next big leap. A lot of that could be attributed to not having that elite lead guard that they've so badly needed.

Kyrie, with an NBA championship in his past, and nine All-Star nods, could be the answer. The Magic have a legit scoring trio anchored by superstar Paolo Banchero, and flanked by another couple of 20+ point per game scorers in Franz Wagner (when healthy) and Desmond Bane. Adding Irving as another mid-20s ppg threat would ease the defensive pressure on the trio.

As for the Mavs, they would get, in Suggs, an elite perimeter defender who brings high-energy tenacious on-ball pressure, plus a lengthy big man in Isaac. He plays only limited minutes, but the 6'11" center can protect the rim pretty well with his wingspan of 7-foot-2.
