LeBron James' Potential Return To Cleveland Takes Big Hit After Latest Report

For all those who were convinced that LeBron James was going to have a storybook ending to his career by going back to Cleveland next season, there's a pretty big reason that might not come to fruition. About $51 million reasons, to be exact.

Insider Brian Windhorst went on ESPN Cleveland on Tuesday and said that while the Cavaliers have room to sign LeBron as a free agent this summer for $3 million, "To my knowledge, LeBron is not prepared to take that type of pay cut." James made $54 million this year with the LA Lakers.

And that same problem exists with other teams due to financial challenges.

Where will LeBron land next season?

"I see people out there, not just Cleveland people, saying, 'Oh, LeBron can sign with the Warriors, or LeBron can sign with the Heat, or LeBron can sign with the Cavs. This is not Aaron Rodgers, where you can wait, and they've got $25 million in cap space lying around. The Cavs, today, can sign LeBron for just $3 million."

The other issue that Windy brings up is the fit for LeBron with the Cavs. He notes that two of Cleveland's core four players, Donovan Mitchell and James Harden, "can't defend. They are guys that get attacked in the playoffs. They cannot defend. If you bring in a 42-year-old LeBron James, that's not going to solve that."

So the dream of LeBron coming back for one more love affair with Cleveland sounds like it's going to die on the vine.

James is from Akron, Ohio, and Cleveland was his childhood team. The Cavs selected him with the first overall pick in the 2003 NBA draft. He played his first seven seasons there and eventually returned after a four-year layover in Miami to lead the Cavaliers in 2016 to their first championship in franchise history.

A third stint in Cleveland and a finish to his career there would have been a storybook ending, indeed. But unless LeBron is prepared to take a $51 million pay cut, it doesn't sound like it's in the cards.
