The new deal keeps McCollum in the ATL for next season, as he was set to hit unrestricted free agency after June 30 if a deal was not done. He would have ranked as the No. 3 point guard available on the market had he made it there.
Hawks went on blistering run once McCollum inserted as starting point guard
The Hawks dealt for McCollum earlier this past season, and the 13-year veteran more than made his mark for the up-and-coming team, as Atlanta went 19-4 with McCollum as the starter from Feb. 22 through the end of the regular season.
This was the 11th straight year that he drained at least 150 threes, which is tied for the 4th-longest stretch in NBA history.
Atlanta completely turned their season around once Trae Young went down to injury early in the year, revamping their team defense, and then trading Young for McCollum to provide floor spacing and a reliable, steady ballhandler and playmaker in the backcourt. He averaged 18.7 points in his 41 games with the Hawks (25 of them starts).
McCollum knocked down the clutch game-winning shots in the dying seconds of Games 2 and 3 against the New York Knicks in the first round of this year's playoffs — really, the last time the champion Knicks were severely tested throughout the postseason.
The 34-year-old vet has averaged 19.5 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists while shooting 40% from three-point range throughout his career.
