LeBron James Narrows Free Agent Choice to 3 Finalists

The LeBron James Sweepstakes is down to three. Or five. Depending on what Shams Charania is thinking at any given time. He says that three teams have been elevated by James to Finalist status, though he also names five teams in total.

It appears that either the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, or Philadelphia 76ers will be LeBron's new home for the 2026-27 season.

The Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves are somehow still in the running, and James is even taking a meeting with Draymond Green in the coming days.

The Denver Nuggets seem to be officially out of it at this point.

"What we do know is that LeBron James wants to be in a competitive, competing environment. He wants to play meaningful basketball," Charania says.

Any of those five teams would fit the bill.

Both the Heat and the Sixers have made huge additions this offseason, with Giannis Antetokounmpo going to Miami and Jaylen Brown being dealt to Philly in a shocker. If either of those get LeBron, they could become the top challenger in the East with a chance to knock off the NY Knicks.

But Shams also says that LeBron plans to take his time in making this decision. He'll be spending the next week continuing to hang out with his family and friends, golfing and socializing. In the meantime, the rest of NBA free agency will likely be on hold until he makes a decision. The teams that lose out will have to pivot and make other plans quickly.
