Steph Curry Linked to Spurs in Blockbuster Trade Proposal

It would be hard to imagine Stephen Curry in any other uniform but the Golden State Warriors. But after a report that he was not happy with losing out on LeBron James, and, essentially, with the team's general strategy to build around him, trade rumors have emerged. Take them for what you will. 

Insider Marcus Thompson II wrote in The Athletic that "The disappointment of missing out on yet another difference-making addition, something to get the Warriors out of the Play-In purgatory they've been in for the last four years, has already morphed into acceptance" for Curry. 

Thompson adds that Curry may even be holding out on extension talks in order to force the Warriors' hand into working harder to surround him with the proper pieces to make another title run. 

"He wants to win. He wants the best team the Warriors can assemble around him. He wants a chance, a real chance, for a deep playoff run. The longer it takes for him to sign a contract extension, the more you can bet Curry’s using potential free agency as a tool to keep the Warriors pushing toward that end."

Proposed blockbuster trade would unite Curry with Wembanyama

In the meantime, trade rumors will continue to surface. The San Antonio Spurs came this close to winning a title this past season, and they are closely monitoring the Curry situation. Here's a proposed blockbuster from Basketball Ground that could unite the game's greatest-ever shooter with the NBA's resident "Alien", Victor Wembanyama:

The Warriors would receive, in exchange for Steph: 

  • Devin Vassell
  • Keldon Johnson
  • De'Aaron Fox 
  • 2028 first-round pick
  • 2030 first-round pick
  • 2032 first-round pick
  • 2029 pick swap 

Noted NBA analyst Kevin O'Connor also believes it would be a perfect setup for Steph to get himself another title. 

Imagine having Wemby and Curry together, and then throw in 2025 ROY Stephon Castle. It would be an impossible task for opposing defenses, and would likely make them the title favorites.

Warriors could get start on rebuild with huge hypothetical package from Spurs for Curry  

In addition to the three first-round picks plus a swap, the Warriors would get a big step up on a rebuild, with a wo-time All-Star point guard in Fox and a strong two-way 3-and-D wing in Vassell, who's averaged over 16 points per game across the last three seasons. A former 19 ppg scorer, his production has dipped the past couple of years as the offense ran more through Wemby. 

Johnson is also an excellent forward who won Sixth Man of the Year honors this past season. He was a 22 ppg scorer a few seasons back, but again, the Spurs have transitioned their offense more to Wembanyama.
