James Harden Signs Multi-Year Free Agent Contract

The deal is done. After waiting all summer so the team could make other moves, free agent James Harden has officially signed to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers. It's a three-year, $97 million deal.

The contract is fully guaranteed, and comes with a player option and a 15% trade kicker.

With some reports in recent weeks suggested that Harden would have to "settle" for something in the range of $25M/year, the nearly $33M AAV he gets on this extension is hardly a haircut for The Beard, even though he did decline his $42.3 million player option after last season.

The $97M deal makes him only the second player in league history to sign for over $90 million in guaranteed salary at age 37 or older.

The Cavs' sign-and-trade for Peyton Watson yesterday on a four-year, $88M deal was the last remaining piece of the financial puzzle for Cleveland to figure out before they were able to come to Harden and wrap up a new contract.

It was essential that Harden lower his annual salary in a three-year deal, versus a more costly two-year deal, in order for Cleveland to get under the first and second aprons.

Mission accomplished.
