Proposed Sign-and-Trade Lands Jalen Duren in Los Angeles
The Detroit Pistons find themselves in a tough spot with top restricted free agent Jalen Duren. After a breakthrough season that saw their young center named an All-Star and earn a spot on the All-NBA Third Team, he was expecting a max contract this summer. His 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game are nothing to sneeze at.
But the Pistons aren't prepared to go that high on a new deal, and the talks have reached the "awfully nasty" stage. Duren's camp has threatened to take the $9M qualifying offer and play out the season to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. The Pistons, for their part, are calling his bluff, and have insisted time and again that they will not consider a sign-and-trade this summer.
But when push comes to shove, who knows which side will blink first.
Grant Hughes of Bleacher Report has proposed a potential Jalen Duren sign-and-trade with the Los Angeles Clippers for a package that would feature star point guard Darius Garland.

As for the Clips, they're currently planning to go with 38-year-old declining center Brook Lopez at the starting spot in the middle. Not ideal for the rebuilding team.
LA traded veteran starting center Ivica Zubac at last season's deadline, as their youth movement began to kick in. Garland, a two-time All-Star at the point, was one of the names they brought in last year, in exchange for James Harden.
As for the Pistons and Duren, it doesn't seem like that whole mess will be coming to any clear conclusion anytime soon. Detroit might need to start considering moves like this hypothetical trade.
