Ex-NBA Player Suspended By Home Country For Signing in Russia

Signing to play in Russia is not exactly going to win you any friends these days. Former Detroit Piston and Boston Celtic Jonas Jerebko has joined CSKA Moscow, and was subsequently suspended from playing for his national team in Sweden.

The 35-year-old Jerebko spent nine years in the NBA, last playing for the Golden State Warriors for a season in 2018-19. He averaged 6.2 points and 4 rebounds throughout his NBA career, while shooting 36% from three-point range.

The Swedish Basketball Federation was obviously none too pleased about their national player signing in Russia, and released the following statement:

Unfortunately, we are forced to state that there are no conditions for Jonas Jerebko to play for the Sweden basketball national team.

Jerebko's decision was met with widespread criticism throughout his home country, according to Eurohoops.netEuroleague Basketball removed all four Russian teams from its roster this season, following that country's invasion of Ukraine.

As for Jerebko, it's his 2nd stint in Moscow; he also played there in 2020-21.
