Even More Bad Injury News for Dallas Mavericks

With Luka Doncic now day-to-day, the ongoing absence of second-leading scorer Christian Wood adds insult to injury (or rather, injury to injury) for the Dallas Mavericks.

Wood has been out for a week with a fractured left thumb, and there's no telling when he'll return. Coach Jason Kidd certainly doesn't sound like he has any idea:

“I think it’s just week to week, just to see how the healing goes,” Kidd said. “It’s been a week now, so we’ll give you another update in a week just to see if there’s been any healing or improvement there.”

It's not the kind of news the Mavs need with Doncic healing from his ankle sprain as well.

And even if Wood does return to action by the February 9th trade deadline, will it be in a Mavs uniform? According to NBA Insider Marc Stein:

He remains a player to monitor as the deadline approaches because the Mavericks will have to consider moving the free agent-to-be if they can’t come to terms with him on a contract extension. Wood became eligible for an extension on Dec. 24 and, without a deal, could walk without compensation in the summer.

After losing Jalen Brunson last summer, the Mavs could ill afford to lose their second-leading scorer for the second year in a row.

Wood is averaging 18.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game in his first season in Dallas.
