NBA Trade Rumors: Mavericks Have 3 Notable Guards on Their Radar

The Dallas Mavericks have some work to do this summer to solidify their backcourt while they wait for Kyrie Irving to return sometime around midseason next year from his torn ACL.

With that, insider Marc Stein has listed three guards that the Mavs have on their radar as potential adds to their roster to fill the void:

Jrue Holiday

If the Mavericks are looking to add a defensive presence in the backcourt (and they should be), Holiday would be a perfect fit.

“League sources say Dallas is expected to at least explore whether there are any feasible trade pathways to Boston’s Jrue Holiday — complicated as that would likely be given the three years and $104 million still left on Holiday’s contract," wrote Stein.

The Celtics are looking to shed salary this offseason to get under the second apron, and the 6-time NBA All-Defensive team member could be had for the right offer. His defense has slipped a bit as he's about to turn 35, but he'd still help cover up for the D that Kyrie doesn't provide. Holiday averaged 11.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game this season in 62 contests.

Lonzo Ball

The Chicago Bulls surprisingly signed the injury-plagued Ball to a two-year, $20 million extension (team option on the second year), even though he'd missed nearly three years with a troubling knee injury. He played 35 games this season, 22 minutes a night, registering 7.6 ppg and 3.3 assists. He wouldn't have to be counted on for a full season, as Irving will be back at some point. Stein called Ball "a far more reasonable trade target" for the Mavs.

Chris Paul

The future Hall of Famer, now 40, would also be a name to watch. He'd also be a nice stopgap who wouldn't have to hold down the fort as a starter for an entire season, which he might not still be able to do. He did surprisingly play all 82 games for the San Antonio Spurs this past season, but he averaged 28 minutes, his second-lowest in a 20-year career. He posted 8.8 points and 7.4 dimes per game.
