Ben Simmons Linked to Unexpected Team in Free Agency

Are the Toronto Raptors interested in Ben Simmons?

As he entered free agency this summer, many were wondering if Ben Simmons' NBA career might be over... or if he even wanted to play basketball anymore. Simmons has been anything but an engaged player in recent years, between a holdout for an entire season and an inability (or unwillingness) to play for long stretches of time.

But according to beat writer Michael Grange of Sportsnet, the Toronto Raptors might be willing to give Simmons a shot in free agency.

So this is what the post-Masai Ujiri era in Toronto will be like?

Per the report, the Raptors could show some interest on a veteran’s minimum contract.

Simmons, a former three-time All-Star, Rookie of the Year, and two-time All-NBA Defensive Team member, averaged 5.0 points, 5.6 assists and 4.7 rebounds this past season, in 22 minutes a night over 51 games for the Brooklyn Nets and LA Clippers.

He's only been available for 44% of his team's games in the past three seasons due to a number of ailments. He's still afraid to shoot the ball, as he's avoided going to the free throw line, averaging just one FT attempt per game over the last three seasons (and shooting just 52% on those minimal attempts). He also has attempted only two three-point shots in the last three seasons combined—none in the past two years.

But as a playmaker? He can still be a force, with his 6'10" ability to see over the defense. His Per-36-Minutes average of 9.2 assists last season can attest to that.

But does the former 1st overall pick (2016 Draft) still want to play in the NBA? And would he do it for $3.1 million (the veteran's minimum)? And maybe more importantly: Do the Raptors want to bring his attitude into their group?
