Breaking: Former 1st Round Pick Signs With Trail Blazers

He was a first-round pick by the San Antonio Spurs just three years ago, and shot 38.5% from three-point land in his rookie season. But things haven't panned out in the NBA for shooting guard Blake Wesley ever since. He's now signed a one-year contract with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Wesley only became a free agent on the weekend, when the Washington Wizards waived him. They had acquired him from the Spurs earlier this month. He was the 25th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft.

Wesley showed some promise in the second half of last season, as noted by Shams Charania, when he returned to a nice percentage from beyond the arc, at 37%. But overall, in three seasons in San Antonio, he's been a marginal player at best, averaging 14.3 minutes a game, 4.3 points, 2.4 assists, and his three-point mark has plummeted to a career pct. of 29.7%.

His contract is a fully guaranteed deal for one year. He'll be the fourth guard in Portland's rotation.

The Trail Blazers have completely re-made their backcourt this offseason, bringing back team legend Damian Lillard (though he will be out for the 2025-26 season rehabbing a torn Achilles), while also adding six-time All-Defensive Team player Jrue Holiday in a trade from the Boston Celtics. Anfernee Simons was shipped to Beantown in that deal.

Shaedon Sharpe and Scoot Henderson are the young studs in the backcourt, and the future for the Blazers, with Lillard to be around to mentor them.
