NBA Trade News: 3-Team Trade Sends Norman Powell to Miami

An intriguing three-team trade has sent Norman Powell, after a career-best year with the LA Clippers, to the Miami Heat

The trade breaks down like this:

Miami Heat receive: -Norman Powell, SF LA Clippers receive: -John Collins, PF Utah Jazz receive: -Kevin Love, PF -Kyle Anderson, F -2027 LAC 2nd-RD pick

It seems like a deal where everyone wins.

The Heat add some serious scoring, with Powell coming off a year in which he averaged 21.8 points per game, 2.1 assists and 1.2 steals. As a catch-and-shoot three-point gunner, Powell is elite. Over the last seven seasons, going back to his days as an NBA champion with the Toronto Raptors, and continuing through his time with the Portland Trail Blazers and then the last few years with the Clippers, Powell has hit on 44.9% of his catch-and-shoot 3s.

The Heat needed another scorer after losing Jimmy Butler in the big deadline trade last season. Powell will service that need. He's owed $20.5 million on an expiring contract in 2025-26.

The Clippers receive an athletic big man in Collins, who will help the team as a stretch-four, playing with Ivica Zubac in the frontcourt. The Clips also added Brook Lopez as a backup center, who can further spread the floor for Kawhi Leonard and James Harden.

The big question is, does this allow the Clippers to go out and get Bradley Beal to backfill on Powell's production? They are one of four teams that Beal is said to be interested in once his potential buyout is complete

As for the Jazz, this was simply a salary dump. As noted by Yossi Gozlan, they decreased their payroll to the point where they could now become a cap space team. He suggests that they'd actually have as much as $22 million in cap space if they were to waive KJ Martin and Jaden Springer's non-guaranteed salaries.
