RFA Cam Thomas Finally Re-Signs With Brooklyn Nets
Restricted free agent Cam Thomas has finally decided to sign a deal with the Brooklyn Nets. But it doesn't exactly bode well for his future in Brooklyn.
Restricted free agent Cam Thomas is signing a one-year, $6 million qualifying offer to return to the Brooklyn Nets, sources tell ESPN. Thomas had the following offers to Cam Thomas, according to insider Shams Charania: a two-year deal worth $30M with a team option on the second season; a one-year, $9.5M contract with no trade protection; and one-year, $6M qualifying offer with a no-trade clause.
He accepted the $6M qualifying offer, essentially deciding to forego money in order to control his next destination, believing he will make that money up as a free agent next summer.
Basically, Thomas is saying, 'I know you want to trade me, so I'm taking a pay cut so I can control where I go'.
Thomas is only the fifth former first-round pick to sign a qualifying offer since 2017.
The Chicago Bulls' Josh Giddey, Golden State Warriors' Jonathan Kuminga, and Philadelphia 76ers' Quentin Grimes now remain the only high-profile RFAs yet to make a decision on a new contract.
Thomas was only able to play in 25 games last season due to injuries, but averaged 24.0 points, 3.8 assists and 3.3 rebounds in 31.2 minutes per night. He's averaged 22.9 points in 31.4 minutes per game over the past two seasons.
