Chicago Bulls Waive Slam Dunk Champion Just 3 Hours After Signing Him

He was the 2024 G League Most Valuable Player, and the three-time reigning NBA Slam Dunk Champion. But the Chicago Bulls did the old sign-and-waive thing with Mac McClung on Friday. They signed him earlier in the day, then three hours later, waived him.

If it was an Exhibit 10 contract, the move would make McClung eligible for a bonus worth up to $85,300 if he spends at least 60 days with the Bulls' G League affiliate, the Windy City Bulls. But they would have to acquire his returning rights from Osceola first. If not, the Bulls did him dirty with just a few hours of false hope.

McClung, the 6'2" high flyer, is one of the most dynamic dunkers on the planet. That explains why, despite never having a regular NBA job (only six games played in the Association across the last four years), he has been invited to participate in—and thoroughly dominate—the NBA's All-Star Weekend Slam Dunk contest each of the last three years. He is only the second player in history to win the competition three times (along with Nate Robinson).

In the G League, he's been a star. Last year, he scored a franchise-high 42 points for the Osceola Magic to lead the team to the Finals.

In his six career NBA games, he's averaged 5.5 points. In the G League last season, he averaged 25.7 points with 5.7 assists. For his MVP year the previous season, he averaged 24.7 ppg.

But it's his three Slam Dunk titles that will forever define the 26-year-old guard.
