Pat Riley Says Miami Heat 'Haven't Committed' To Tyler Herro

After the trade of Jimmy Butler at the trade deadline last season, Tyler Herro became the unquestioned leader of the Miami Heat offense. He boosted his scoring by over three points a game, to finish at 23.9 ppg, to go along with another career high with 5.5 assists, as well as playing a career-high 77 games.

Now, with two years to run on his contract, with $31 million coming to him this season, and $33 million next year, talk has already begun about whether a potential extension is in order. He became eligible for one on Wednesday.

But Heat president Pat Riley isn't rushing into anything, and, per Bobby Marks, says he's not yet committing to Herro for a further extension.

"Pay me now or pay me later, whatever it is," Heat president Pat Riley said after the season. "We've already talked about it. I talked about it with Tyler, and so we'll see what happens as we plan.

"The numbers are getting pretty big for a lot of guys. Max salaries in this league, who do they go to? I mean, who do they go to and who is really? If you're going to make $70 million a year, who are those five or 10 guys that deserve that?"

But Tyler definitely is deserving of the thought of an extension. But are we going to do it? We haven't committed to it, but we're going to discuss it and I've already talked to him about it. He's cool.

Oct. 20th is the final day for Herro and the Heat to agree to a three-year, $149.7 million extension. But if they wait until next summer, that gets bumped to a potential four-year, $207 million extension, or even more if he makes All-NBA.

After a number of injury problems over his career, Herro finally played a full season last year. But he's already starting 2025-26 on the injured list after ankle surgery that will keep him out for about the first four or five weeks of the season, into the end of November. That will all play into the potential extension talks for each side.
