Breaking: Ja Morant on Trade Block, 4 Teams Linked

Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant brings the ball up the floor

The speculation has been out there, and certainly, the body language is plain to see. But finally, the Memphis Grizzlies have admitted that they are open to trading mercurial and controversial point guard Ja Morant.

Shams Charania says that "multiple teams" are interested, and rival executives believe the Grizzlies are looking for draft picks and young players in return.

This is the first time, notes Charania, that the Grizzlies have engaged other teams in trade talks for the two-time All-Star. Morant was the No. 2 pick in the 2019 draft.

The 26-year-old has played only 18 games this season due to injuries and a team suspension, and is averaging 19.0 points and 7.6 assists in 28.3 minutes per game. But that comes with a career-low 40.1% from the field and 20.8% from 3-point range.

So which teams are interested in bringing in the volatile point guard? One NBA insider feels there isn't much of a market for him.

Irwin wonders who would give up anything of value for Morant. "Dude can’t stay healthy, has publicly stated he won’t do many of the things that used to make him special and is far likelier to get suspended than he is to win you a playoff series? Plus that contract?"

He was suspended by the Grizzlies for a verbal altercation with the head coach earlier this season, and has been suspended by the NBA on a couple of occasions for gun-related incidents.

Nevertheless, several teams have already emerged as potential landing spots.

Kevin O'Connor of The Ringer lists the Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves and Sacramento Kings.

The Kings emerged as the odds-on favorite to land Morant, per DraftKings, at +400, following closely by the Timberwolves and Milwaukee Bucks at +600, then the Heat at +750.

The Heat and the Kings make a ton of sense, as both are looking for star lead guards to take them into the future. Miami has the young, promising players to offer back in a deal, including potentially putting center Kel’el Ware and/or Sixth Man contender Jaime Jaquez Jr. into an offer.

The Kings, on the other hand, have some seasoned star veterans to offer, in the likes of Domantas Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine.

As for the T-Wolves, beat writer Jon Krawczynski writes, "The Wolves will inherently be linked to any point guard available out there. On Ja, the money aspect of it makes it really difficult. They’d have to give up a lot of depth in a team playing really well to do a deal. Not impossible, but very, very challenging."

Morant still has two more years remaining on his contract, worth a total of $87.1 million. He's making $39.4M this year.
