NBA Trade Rumor: Jonathan Kuminga Heads to Phoenix Suns in 3-Team Deal
It's only a matter of time before the Golden State Warriors move disgruntled Jonathan Kuminga out of town. He became trade eligible on the 15th of January, and immediately requested to be moved. The Dubs are only too happy to oblige, but they'll need to find a deal that interests them first.
We've seen all sorts of hypothetical trades already, like one that sends Kuminga to the Dallas Mavericks.
Today, we're hearing of a proposed three-team trade that would land Kuminga in a destination that was trying to acquire him back in the summer. This deal, put forward by Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report, would get the athletic scoring forward to the Phoenix Suns.
Phoenix Suns Receive:
- Jonathan Kuminga
- Trayce Jackson-Davis
Golden State Warriors receive:
- De'Andre Hunter
Cleveland Cavaliers receive:
- Royce O'Neale
- Nick Richards
- Ryan Dunn
The Suns tried to pull off a sign-and-trade for the RFA Kuminga during the offseason. In fact, at the time, it was called "the most lucrative push" to pry him loose from Golden State, with a four-year offer at $90 million. That was well shy of Kuminga's dream ask of a $30M a year stipend.
For Phoenix, Swartz notes that new head coach Jordan Ott is "quickly becoming a master of player development," and getting Kuminga under his wing could help the Warriors forward finally break out.
Dubs would get a 'drama-free' 3-and-D wing to replace Kuminga in proposed deal
The Warriors would get a perfect fit in De'Andre Hunter. A versatile, athletic, 3-and-D wing who is an elite defender on the court, and would be a welcome addition off it, as Swartz writes:
"His laid-back personality and drama-free game would be a refreshing change of pace for a Warriors organization that's had to pretend the house wasn't on fire even though Kuminga was constantly running around with a box of matches."
As for the Cavaliers, O'Neale and Donovan Mitchell are tight from their days in Utah, so that's a plus, and additionally, they would get a player back in Dunn who can guard multiple positions, plus some depth at center in Richards, and an expiring contract as well. The Cavs need some help getting out of the second apron, and Swartz says this deal would help them in that cause.
