3 Dream Offseason Trade Targets for Miami Heat This Summer
The Miami Heat are still a marquee team in the NBA. But despite Bam Adebayo's historic 83-point performance last week, they are still a team without a marquee player—a true superstar—going into next season. And that can't sit well with Pat Riley.
To that end, Dan Favale of Bleacher Report has listed three offseason trade targets for the Heat — let's call them "Dream" trade targets. But with Miami a prime destination, anything is possible. And each of these options would bring the "superstar" glitter back to South Beach.
Giannis Antetokounmpo
Ah yes, the Giannis Sweepstakes will once again be all the rage this summer. He spent the last year being the poster boy in Milwaukee for that old song, "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" It seems like his mind changed several times, and though, in the end, he remained with the Bucks at the trade deadline, there will surely be trade talks galore on Giannis again come the summer. The Heat should be at the front of the line, as they are thought to be one of the Greek Freak's prefered destinations.
Kawhi Leonard
So what's the deal with Kawhi and the Clippers? The NBA is supposedly getting closer to ruling on the cap circumvention scandal that has rocked the team all season. Voiding the remaining year on Leonard's contract is one of the potential options on the table.
Either way, either in free agency or via the trade route, the Heat will be a team that checks in on Kawhi. They'd probably prefer it to be on a contact year so they don't have to commit to some crazy long deal for the 34-year-old.
As Favale notes, "As someone who doesn't need screens to generate his own buckets but can run more traditional sets with Bam Adebayo or Kel'el Ware, he fits whatever iteration of the offense Miami is running. Miami is also one of the franchises to which you can envision him getting traded and not threatening to retire."
Donovan Mitchell
The Cavaliers went for broke at the trade deadline, breaking up the core four and dealing for James Harden in an attempt to really push this team to the next level—i.e. championship contention. Of course, it should be noted that Harden has never been known as a playoff performer, so it's quite possible the Cavs' plans could fall flat. If that happens, Spida could finally want out, and the Heat would be ready to pounce.
