Celtics Discussing Blockbuster 1-for-1 With Pistons For Jaylen Brown

The Jaylen Brown talks continue for the Boston Celtics, as the team faces an uncomfortable situation if they try to bring him back after trying (but failing) to trade him twice in the past four years. First, it was for Kevin Durant when he was with the Brooklyn Nets back in 2022, and now, of course, the very loud trade talks this offseason that would have had Brown heading to the Milwaukee Bucks (or a third team as a facilitator) in a Giannis Antetokounmpo deal.

But a blockbuster move could still be on the horizon for Brown, if the following doozy of a deal were to come to fruition. The Detroit Pistons are said to be interested, and the rumor would be that burgeoning star big man (and restricted free agent) Jalen Duren would go to Boston in a sign-and-trade.

“One more fascinating scenario that we've been advised not to rule out completely: A possible sign-and-trade run at Boston's perennial All-Star Brown," wrote Fischer.

“Detroit is very much weighing the prospect of signing-and-trading restricted free agent Jalen Duren for Brown... This would...obviously clash with the Pistons' longstanding view that Duren and Ausar Thompson are franchise pillars alongside Cunningham.”

Pistons & RFA Duren nowhere close to agreement on new contract

The Pistons do love Duren, but their talks on an extension for the RFA have hit a roadblock. Sam Amick of The Athletic says that the two sides are nowhere close to an agreement.

“According to the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the negotiation is ongoing, the gap between the sides is large enough that Duren is considering ways to land elsewhere, with the sign-and-trade route deemed preferable to signing an offer sheet with another team that the Pistons could, and likely would, match."

Duren had a breakout season, bolstering his scoring by eight points a game to 19.5 ppg, while grabbing his usual double-digit rebounds (10.5). That would certainly fill the void at center that Boston is trying to address.

In Detroit, under this scenario, Brown and Cade Cunningham would be a beast for other teams to stop, but the Pistons would be left with a gaping hole in the middle, especially considering that they also traded their backup center, Isaiah Stewart, earlier this week.
