NBA Trade Rumors: Hornets & Kings Discussing Blockbuster Big-Man Deal

The Sacramento Kings have had three-time All-Star big man Domantas Sabonis on the trade block all year. Nothing materialized at the deadline, but there is a push to get something done this summer.

Insider Michael A. Scotto of HoopsHype reports that the Kings have discussed a big-man trade with the Charlotte Hornets that would look like this:

Charlotte Hornets receive:
  • Domantas Sabonis

Sacramento Kings receive:
  • Miles Bridges
  • Josh Green
  • First-round pick

Why the Hornets would make this trade:

"Charlotte has considered a starting-caliber center upgrade," per Scotto, "as the Hornets surged last season by winning 44 games, which marked a 25-win improvement, the largest win improvement in franchise history. Bridges ($22.83 million) and Green ($14.68 million) are on expiring contracts entering the 2026-27 season."

Both of those players would need to be included to help match the $45M that Sabonis will be earning this coming year. He has one more season on his deal as well after that one.

Indeed, the Hornets have an exciting young roster, with LaMelo Ball at the one, rookie surprise Kon Knueppel at the two, and rising star Brandon Miller at the three. Charlotte could use a big-time boost at the center spot, however, as Scotto noted, and Sabonis would represent a massive upgrade over Moussa Diabate.

Why would the Kings do this deal?

For Sacramento, they help out their books, by bringing in two expiring contracts. Not to mention the fact that general manager Scott Perry was an executive with the New York Knicks when they were considering drafting Bridges over Kevin Knox during the 2018 NBA Draft. Additionally, Perry and Bridges have Michigan ties.
