Reports: Walker Kessler Turns Down Jazz Extension, Marquee Team Ready to Pounce

Big man Walker Kessler has said, "No, thanks" to the Utah Jazz's extension offer of $140 million, and is looking for "significantly more", per ESPN's Tim MacMahon.

Add that to the news that Luka Doncic came out today and pleaded for the Lakers to obtain a center he can make use of in the pick-and-roll, and it's no surprise to hear that the Lakers brass has "internally" discussed going after Kessler this summer.

Doncic told Essentially Sports what he needs the Lakers to go get for him for next season, and it was clear that one of his biggest needs is a big man to run with.

“I think mainly shooters and a big man who can run the pick-and-roll and jump so I can pass to him. If I have shooters, they won’t double me as much, and it helps me out. I think I always need shooters around me because I usually get double-teamed a lot, so I think I need shooters—and some centers who can jump high and block shots.”

There aren't many centers who can block shots better than the 7'2" Kessler, who also serves as a massive lob target who can quick-pivot out of screens and roll hard to the rim for dunks. He fits Luka's desires to a T.

Jazz at risk of Kessler receiving an offer sheet

If the Jazz can't come up with an extension offer that Kessler likes before their exclusive negotiation window closes on June 30, the Lakers (or any other rival team) can swoop in with an offer sheet.

Kessler, turning 25 next month, missed all but five games this past season due to shoulder surgery, and his current contract demands might be a little out of touch.

He has averaged 2.4 blocks per game in his 4+ year career, along with 9.5 points and 9.3 rebounds. In his last full(ish) season, 2024-25, he recorded 11.1 ppg and 12.2 boards with his standard 2.4 blocks.
