Top 5 Star NBA Trade Candidates This Summer (Non-Giannis, Non-Durant Division)
While NBA free agency might not be as splashy this summer as it has been in the past, the trade market is likely to be sizzling hot, as some huge names dominate the NBA landscape as players who could change teams.
Of course, the two biggest names that everyone is talking about are Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kevin Durant, and we've covered them at length. But there are other NBA stars who could be moving to a new location this summer, and here are five of the biggest:
Laurie Markkanen, Utah Jazz
His name was prominent last offseason, but the Jazz decided to hang on to Markkanen, and instead signed him to a massive four-year extension. It might not have been the right move, as his trade value would have been much higher last July.
The former All-Star has seen his production, and health, take a dip over the past three years. His points have dropped from 25.6 ppg, to 23.2 and down to just 19 ppg this past season. His availability was another problem, as a back issue limited him to just 47 games, down from 55 games the year before, and 66 the season before that. In fact, Markkanen has never even reached the 70 games played mark in his eight-year career. But yet, there are teams that still hold some interest.
Potential Destinations: Nate Duncan of the Hollinger & Duncan Podcast names the Golden State Warriors as a potential destination, while John Hollinger mentions the Sacramento Kings.
Jrue Holiday, Boston Celtics
Duncan calls the Celtics' summer "one of the most complex, impossible offseasons that I can remember." They need to make some serious salary cuts to get under the second apron, and any of their big-money stars could be traded. Holiday seems like one of the most likely candidates. "I think Boston's Plan A is to move that Holiday contract," says Hollinger. The six-time All-Defensive Team member has three years to run at about a $34M AAV.
Potential Destinations: Dallas Mavericks (trade proposal here), LA Clippers, LA Lakers
Jaylen Brown, Boston Celtics
Hollinger and Duncan said that the C's absolutely do have to "listen" to offers on Brown, as well. He'll be earning $57 million (on average) for the next four years.
We've covered a potential blockbuster Brown trade here.
Walker Kessler, Utah Jazz
Our second big Jazz trade candidate on this list. "He has more value to someone else" than he does to the Jazz, says Duncan. And that someone else, he says, would be the LA Lakers. We know that the Lakers have been linked to just about every center trade candidate in the league as they look to fill their gaping hole in the middle. Duncan goes on to suggest that the package they tried to send to Charlotte for Mark Williams (before Williams failed his physical) would be something they should offer the Jazz for Kessler.
Trae Young, Atlanta Hawks
He has been rumored as a trade candidate for a couple of years now, but the insiders question just how much value Young has around the league. "He's not worth more to another team than he is to Atlanta," says Duncan.
As for Giannis, the latest rumors have the Toronto Raptors leaping to the front of the line in those sweepstakes, if he does, indeed, ask out of Milwaukee, while KD is being pushed aggressively by the Suns on the Houston Rockets.
