NBA free agency doesn't begin for another 10 days, but the first "I intend to sign..." announcement is now upon us. Undrafted free agent guard Collin Gillespie intends to sign a four-year, $48 million deal to return to the Phoenix Suns.

Insider Shams Charania reports on the deal, after Gillespie's breakout season with Phoenix this year in which he doubled his minutes, to 28 per game, and more than doubled his point output, to 12.7 ppg. He also set a Suns franchise record for three-pointers with 232 made. He hit on 40% of his threes, while adding 4.1 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.2 steals, and was a core piece of the Suns' better-than-expected 45-win season, and now, of their future.

His grittiness on the defensive end also makes him a perfect fit for the new Suns identity.

Teams were able to begin negotiating with their own free agents last weekend, and the Suns were anxious to get a deal done to prevent Gillespie from receiving offers from other clubs.

After being on two-way contracts for his first three NBA seasons, Gillespie’s big new deal is fully guaranteed, sources tell Jake Fischer. The Villanova product has spent two years with the Suns, and was operating on a minimum salary last season.
